At its southern end, The Preserve at the Port District, a 13-acre nature preserve, opened with a ribbon cutting March 4, 2026, adding walking trails, boardwalk connections and nature overlooks along a wetland, per the city’s announcement.

Parking: the city sends visitors to Veterans Park at Rivergate, 2100 SE Veterans Memorial Parkway; Tom Hooper Park, 2300 SE Rivergate Parkway; and the post office lot at 2255 SE Veterans Memorial Parkway, then along the boardwalk. There is no event parking at the nearby business plazas. The Botanical Gardens and Pioneer Park’s playground sit on the same stretch; see The Port District.

Wilderness Trail: coming this fall

Construction began in January 2026 on a 2.1-mile, 10-foot-wide concrete trail in Wilderness Park, 2701 SE Westmoreland Blvd., with a new restroom building, covered pavilion, picnic tables and a drinking fountain, per the city. It will link The Saints, The Port and other areas along the river. The city expected completion in fall 2026; a $500,000 state Recreational Trails grant helped pay for it.

McCarty Ranch Preserve

West of I-95, south of the Glades Cut Off Road and Range Line Road intersection, McCarty Ranch has cleared trails for walking, biking and horseback riding, a lake system of more than 300 acres for paddling and fishing, and an 18-hole disc golf course. It is open 7 a.m. to sunset daily. The city’s trail map warns that trails and campsites may close when the ground is wet, that users walk, bike and ride at their own risk, and that ATVs and dirt bikes are not allowed.
