Coming: Costco in Southern Grove

In March the city’s Governmental Finance Corporation, made up of the five City Council members, took up a purchase and sale agreement with Costco Wholesale for about 22.8 acres in Southern Grove, next to a distribution depot under construction. Costco proposed a 170,000-square-foot store and gas station. The city calls it a top resident request for many years.

Updated Oct. 17: the City Council approved the store’s major site plan Oct. 12: a 163,000-square-foot store with a tire center, a liquor store and a 32-position gas station at SW Village Parkway and SW Marshall Parkway, according to the city staff report. We will add an opening date when Costco or the city announces one.

Opening a business in the city

From the city’s Business Tax page:

  • Every business with a location in city limits, including home-based businesses, needs a local business tax receipt.
  • Receipts expire Sept. 30 each year; operating without one brings penalties.
  • A business in a commercial area must fit the zoning; the Planning and Zoning Department reviews each application.
  • Electronic payments carry a 2.35% service fee.

What this means for you

  • New places to try: Estampa Gaucha and Wingstop opened their doors to inspectors in October.
  • Watch Tradition’s Discovery Way, where several food businesses were licensed this summer.
  • Business owners: renew your city tax receipt by Sept. 30 each year.

Related: building permits and zoning, restaurant inspections and public notices.
