Seven Port St. Lucie precincts and one in Fort Pierce vote at new places Tuesday after flooding cut road access. Check the list before you go; polls open 7 a.m.

Voters in eight St. Lucie County precincts will cast their ballots somewhere new on Tuesday. Flooding has cut road access to their usual polling places.

Seven of the eight precincts are in Port St. Lucie. The other, Precinct 12, is in Fort Pierce, about 10 miles north.

Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker announced the moves Monday in a notice posted by her office (PDF). The changes are “due to inclement weather and flooding that has affected road access to certain polling locations,” the notice said. The new sites were chosen “to ensure voters have safe and accessible locations to cast their ballots.”

The City of Port St. Lucie republished the list on its own news page.

Why the polls moved

The rain has been extreme. At 6:33 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a Flood Warning for central St. Lucie County, naming Port St. Lucie among the places affected. Doppler radar indicated 6 to 14 inches of rain had fallen in the warned area, and flooding was already occurring, the weather service said.

A Flood Watch for the county now runs until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Forecasters said any rain overnight could make the flooding worse. Our flood watch story has the latest warnings and road reports.
